Mediation Week Kicks Off With Over 100 Events - mediation week
In France, the collective Médiation 21 took over coordination in 2019.

The eighth annual Mediation Week begins on October 10, kicking off a series of events designed to raise awareness about conflict resolution for the public, businesses, and institutions. Fabrice Vert, a magistrate and sponsor of the event, officially opened the week on October 3 during the 19th Mediation Festival organized by IFOMENE, which focused on the theme of technology and mediation. Although the official launch date is October 10, numerous promotional activities have already begun across the country.

A History of Peace

The initiative began in 2005 in the United States through the Association for Conflict Resolution (ACR). It started as a single day dedicated to peace and non-conflictual communication on the third Tuesday of October, but it quickly expanded into a full week. The movement has since spread internationally, with associations and groups in various countries, including Belgium, Switzerland, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands, organizing their own events to celebrate peaceful dispute resolution.

In France, the collective Médiation 21 took over coordination in 2019. The organization manages a dedicated website and a newsletter to list and promote all activities. The events during this week take many forms, including conferences, workshops, open doors, debates, mediator hotlines, theatrical performances, collective information sessions, individual consultations, and street events.

The official program currently lists more than 100 events nationwide. Organizers can register their activities on the website semainedelamediation.fr to ensure they appear in the calendar. Examples of upcoming activities include a forum theater performance at a high school in La Celle-Saint-Cloud and a “Village of Amicable and Mediation” in La Rochelle. There is also a specific program titled “Le haut conflit” in Essonne, covering family mediation in intense conflict situations, which includes a film-debate on October 13 followed by a conference and forum theater on October 16.

A First in Paris

A significant event this year is the collaboration between the Tribunal and the Paris Bar Association, marking the first time the judicial institution joins the Mediation Week. From October 12 to 15, professionals will participate in a week dedicated to amicable and contractual justice. The program kicks off with an introductory conference on the morning of October 12, starting at 9:30 a.m. in the tribunal auditorium.
